Robot assisted radical prostatectomy

Radical prostatectomy consists of a surgical procedure aimed at the removal of the prostate in cases of prostate cancer. Generally, it is recommended that patients with localized cancer, an expected lifespan of over 10 years, and in good health undergo this type of intervention. The procedure also involves the removal of the seminal vesicles and regional lymph nodes, followed by bladder-urethral anastomosis, and can be performed through various approaches.
Robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP) utilizes a robotic system that allows the surgeon to use specialized instruments to remove the prostate and surrounding tissue through small abdominal incisions. Robotic surgery offers several advantages over traditional surgery, including increased precision, reduced invasiveness, and a quicker recovery.
The surgery, performed under general anesthesia, has a variable duration that depends on the size of the prostate and the characteristics of the disease and the patient. Discharge will occur with a urinary catheter, which will be removed later after a cystography.
Like any surgical procedure, RARP is associated with potential complications. The main risks include urinary incontinence and erectile dysfunction. After the procedure, it is common for patients to experience a period of urinary incontinence that can last from a few days to several months. This phenomenon resolves spontaneously in 95-96% of patients. The patient’s erectile function prior to the surgery, age, and the possibility of performing nerve-sparing surgery are key variables to consider when assessing potential post-operative erectile dysfunction. It is essential to offer patients rehabilitation programs in andrology at the time of discharge.
To date, RARP, which offers many advantages over traditional surgery, has become an increasingly popular choice for the treatment of prostate cancer. However, it remains essential to discuss with your urologist the risks, benefits, and available alternatives to make an informed and conscious decision.”
